Hair serum from the Juliette Crowe product line now features new Polydose™ airless tube packaging. The “Serum Reparador Intensivo” for dry hair was launched in the winter season. Exactly 0.5 ml of product is applied per spray, a quantity that is optimal for massaging into the ends of the hair. What’s so special about this launch is it’s the first 30mm diameter commercial Polydose™ airless tube ever made. It is sold in Spain via the masstige channel. In early autumn 2011, Valquer was searching for practical 50ml airless packaging and struck gold with Neopac. Product tolerability tests and pump tests had to be carried out swiftly, as explained by Manolo Cerillo from Laboratoires Valquer: “On this project, we have gained our first experience with Polyfoil® tubes. The collaboration with Neopac has been very pleasant. Especially convincing was their technical expertise in the preliminary investigations.”

Velvety soft Airless Tube from Neopac

Today, I was handed the first sample of a Polydose airless tube made of soft touch material. It has almost a noble quality when done in matte, and feels velvety soft. To my way of thinking, it would add another dimension to “softening body cream”, “matte foundation” or “baby care products”. I also learned that we can now cover all tubes from Ø19mm to Ø50mm with soft touch material, with no restrictions on head style or applicator. I wonder who will the first customer will be to order the Polydose Airless Tube in soft touch. If you’re interested, get your sample now or let me know what other products you would see fitting in with the soft touch concept.

Discussion: Should Neopac invest into PCR Tubes?

For the first time, Neopac is exhibiting at Luxe Pack, New York, which began yesterday. Richard Misdom just sent me a picture from the booth where he met with Boris Schaefer, the new Sales Manager Cosmetics for North America. To sum up the first day, Rich said: “The booth location is wonderful! We received many visitors at the booth with whom to share the new Essential Collection and Polydose airless tube. The Show is really great.”

ISIS Pharma overjoyed with the Polydose Airless Tube

ISIS Pharma has successfully launched its “Bodytone White” in our Polydose airless tube.

I took this as a chance to interview Samuel Valenzuela, General Manager, ISIS Pharma

C: Hello Samuel, thanks for taking the time to help us out. What product are we talking about and when was the project begun and ended?
S: We’re talking about our Bodytone white moisturizing cream filled in a Polydose airless Ø40mm from Neopac with a 100ml capacity. We began doing market reconnaissance for the project near the end of 2009, and then at the 2010 edition of Luxe Pack Monaco we first encountered Neopac and were informed about this innovative airless packaging. The product Launch was in March 2011 and we have had a great feedback from the market.

C: So why did ISIS Pharma decide to go with Neopac to create the packaging? Why Neopac and not another provider?
S: Mr. Frédéric Fernandez, Neopac’s regional sales manager for France, provided us with this unique and extraordinarily innovative tube concept. We definitely required an airless system, and preferably something with a pump. As for the paraben free formula of ”Bodytone white” we needed high protection from too much moisture or oxygen. The Polydose offers precisely what we were looking for - high barrier protection with its Polyfoil Laminate and a convenient application form with the Megaplast airless pump. It was the smart choice.

C: What was your most difficult requirement to fulfil?
S: Sizing. We needed to be able to market our product in a fairly large volume, so having a bigger size was a big achievement for us. We’re talking more than 100ml in an airless container, which is pretty difficult to find. Even if you DO find it, the quality of the packaging doesn’t compare with what Neopac is offering. Now we´ve also moved on to smaller sizes – the Polydose Diameter 25mm and Diameter 30mm.

C: Could you describe your product a bit?
S: Bodytone white is a whitening body moisturizer, to be applied on the body, once a day, at night. The light and non-greasy texture of the cream is quickly absorbed. It provides a feeling of comfort during application and leaves skin durably hydrated. It’s rich in natural hydrating components associated with a complex of active whitening ingredients. Bodytone White helps skin recover its suppleness, brightness and clarity after only a few applications.

C: Wow, thank you for this open feedback Samuel!

C: What’s your personal opinion of Neopac’s products? Anything to say about Neopac?
S: Simply excellent. The treatment has been fantastic and the products are exactly what we wanted, just extraordinary. If I had to say something negative, for equilibrium, I’d say that what we ordered was a little bit expensive…but quality has a price! The regional sales manager from Neopac, Mr. Frédéric Fernandez, is really good, he made the deal possible. He really understood where we were coming from, he got our motto – to provide the best for our customers and patients. Neopac really delivered!

New regulation to affect suppliers of UV-cured inks and varnish

Switzerland has introduced new regulation regarding the potential migration of potentially toxic substances used in UV-cured inks and lacquers for cosmetics packaging.
Although the regulation is currently only in place in Switzerland, according to industry insiders it is expected to be adopted in wider geographical regions, affecting any supplier of such products looking to target the European market.

At the recent PCD Congress held in Paris, France last week, CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com spoke to Dr Philippe Kern, head of Materialscience and Development at Neopac to find out more about this regulation.

According to Kern, the regulation limits the use of certain photo initiators and monomers that the UV-cured system relies on, as some have suspected carcinogenic effects. Airless Tube: How many initial strokes are acceptable?

At the moment, there are discussions among our customers about priming the product in an airless tube. Priming refers to the number of initial strokes a consumer needs to apply to a pump before the product dispenses properly. So, what is a reasonably acceptable average in the industry for airless packaging?

To answer this question we need to look at different influences:

Viscosity of a formulation
The more viscous a product, the stronger a pump needs to work to ensure the correct vacuum.
Once the product is primed, the product continues to flow through the pump automatically.
In general, we can say that products that are lower in viscosity require less priming.

Filling process
Another impact on priming an airless tube is a careful filling process. The formula should not contain air bubbles. They can cause “spitting” or “interruption”. Plus, the length of the tube has to be chosen specifically for the amount of ml. The Polydose airless tube needs to be filled almost to the top to prevent air pockets at the extremes (or in the front, if you turn the tube). Another option (not a necessity) is to fill under vacuum, but not many customers have this special equipment.

The truth about additional “dip tubes”
Whereas systems with dip tubes deliver good priming (they dip directly into the product), our Polydose airless tubes have the advantage of a perfect emptying of residues and less material consumption for environmental issues.

A short market test
My collaborators have tested airless packaging that is already available on the market for facial and hair care products. This included bottles and tubes, top- or bottom-filled.
On average, we noted 2-10 priming strokes – some didn’t even work at all or required over 15 strokes.
As you can see, a big range already exists on the market.

Our goal
Haluk Cimentepe (Industrial Director of Megaplast) knows by experience that consumers accept a range of 1-10 priming strokes. Therefore, with Polydose, we ensure an average that does not exceed 5 strokes, on all available diameters of 15ml-150 ml fill, if filled according to our guidelines.

For all the above reasons, we hope you’ll understand why first and foremost in a project, we’ll need to ensure that the pump functions impeccably with your particular formulation.
